Groundwater springs in the German Wadden Sea tidal flat: A fast-track terrestrial transfer route for nutrients and dissolved organic matter

چکیده

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) connects fresh and marine ecosystems conveys terrestrially derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) nutrients from land to sea. The connectivity of terrestrial via SGD depends strongly on local environmental settings. For example, composition is modified its transit through the coastal aquifer, with spring-type highly permeable aquifers presumably being less affected than diffuse systems sedimentary environments. In our study, we investigated near Sahlenburg/Cuxhaven, Northern Germany, which passes fine, unconsolidated tidal sediments before entering ocean. We characterized groundwater, surface water seawater endmembers different seasons assessed potential impacting biogeochemistry “fast-track”, point-source systems. addition physicochemical parameters nutrients, analyzed DOM molecular ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). Our data revealed a widespread geochemical influence springs flat, producing low salinity carbon (DOC), high nitrate oxygen concentrations not only in springs, but also adjacent porewater. From near- offshore, DOC decreased whereas increased, resembling an inverse estuarine pattern. Furthermore, values suggest anthropogenic sources (e.g., agricultural influence) surrounding watershed may stimulate primary productivity flat. Humic-like fluorescent (FDOM) abundances fingerprints indicated inputs nearshore saltmarsh plants, as well nearby Elbe Weser estuaries. study demonstrated that had strong impact even vicinity large rivers, productive actively hindering sulfate reduction by flushing otherwise anoxic oxygen. posit flats underestimated because it can extend far beyond their visual points.

Sea cucumbers reduce chromophoric dissolved organic matter in aquaculture tanks

Background Mono-specific aquaculture effluents contain high concentrations of nutrients and organic matter, which affect negatively the water quality of the recipient ecosystems. A fundamental feature of water quality is its transparency. The fraction of dissolved organic matter that absorbs light is named chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). A sustainable alternative to mono-specific ...

Nutrients and Dissolved Organic Matter in the Altamaha River and Loading to the Coastal Zone

Ammonium (NH4 ), nitrate+nitrite (NOx), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus (DOC, DON and DOP) were measured in the Altamaha River and several tributaries during a two year period from September 2000 through September 2002. Temporal variations in concentration as well as nutrient and dissolved organic matter loading from the Altamaha to the...

Consequences of increased terrestrial dissolved organic matter and temperature on bacterioplankton community composition during a Baltic Sea mesocosm experiment

Predicted increases in runoff of terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) and sea surface temperatures implicate substantial changes in energy fluxes of coastal marine ecosystems. Despite marine bacteria being critical drivers of marine carbon cycling, knowledge of compositional responses within bacterioplankton communities to such disturbances is strongly limited. Using 16S rRNA gene pyroseq...

Relationships between colored dissolved organic matter and dissolved organic carbon in different coastal gradients of the Baltic Sea

Due to high terrestrial runoff, the Baltic Sea is rich in dissolved organic carbon (DOC), the light-absorbing fraction of which is referred to as colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Inputs of DOC and CDOM are predicted to increase with climate change, affecting coastal ecosystems. We found that the relationships between DOC, CDOM, salinity, and Secchi depth all differed between the two coa...
